Rockies Shut Out Mets To Complete Sweep

The Colorado Rockies continued to ride their hot pitching staff yesterday, defeating the New York Mets 1-0 and completing a 4 game sweep at Citi Field.

Yesterday I wrote that the Rockies had surrendered a total of 5 runs to the Mets so far in their series against them. One day and one game later, that is still true.

It was Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers, Will Harris, and Matt Belisle who were the heroes out of the bullpen on this day. Tyler Chatwood started the game and pitched fine with the exception of 3 walks and a high pitch count. At a somewhat awkward 68 pitches after 3 innings, Tracy figured Chatwood would not finish the 4th and made the switch before the inning started. Brothers, who is pegged as a potential candidate for closer of the future, showed some nice versatility by working 2 innings and earning the victory.

The strength of this bullpen is no mirage. Even overworked and pitching under

stupid

unique circumstances, they have consistently been effective.

When it comes to a last place team like the Rockies as they play out the end of their schedule, we search for the ambiguous “hope for the future.” The bullpen has advanced to a more solid designation: something to build on. If it’s all about pitching, the Rockies have strength in one of the two parts of that department.
