Rockies looking to add to left-handed hole with Rodriguez

In a busy day in the Rockie’s offices, the team claimed left-handed starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez from the Houston Astros.

Rodriguez has an ERA of 3.31, which is better than any of the current Rockie’s starter. Jhoulys Chacin is close in second with 3.49. Rodriguez is 9-9 on the season.

One major piece to the championship puzzle the Rockies have been missing this season is a starting lefty after Jorge De La Rosa was put on the DL list because of a torn elbow ligament, causing the pitcher to undergo Tommy John in June.

Rodriguez could be the player to give the Rockies the run they need if the team wants to hold onto any hope at a possible post-season. I know it’s a long stretch, but the Rockies are 8.5 games back in the NL West, behind the struggling Diamondbacks and Giants. It will take a lot of hard work, but I still have faith the Rockies can pull it off.

Rodriguez can come in great use in the middle and end of September when we take on the Giants on the 15-18 and again on the 26-28, bringing the regular season to a close. Last Friday, Rodriguez pitched a scoreless eight innings against the Giants, giving the Astros a 6-0 win over the Giants. Considering the season the Astros have had, that is saying quite a bit.

Pitching has been a major sore spot in the line-up this year for Colorado, but changes have been made a lot recently. Tonight will be a first look at the talent the team has obtained in the starting position on the mound when we get a first glimpse at RHP Alex White, appearing in his first major league game with the Rockies since completing his rehab assignment with the Sky Sox.
