Morning Dump — Babe Tulowitzki
Dating back to last September, Troy Tulowitzki has 20 homeruns in 158 at-bats. That is a homerun every 7.9 at bats, a stat that would make even the great Babe Ruth jealous. So far this season, Tulo has 11 hits and eight of them have been for extra bases — 5 HRs, 3 2Bs. Last night, Terry Collins should’ve pitched around Tulo in the fifth inning, but he chose to risk it. Tulo immediately deposited an outside fastball 10 rows deep into the right field bleachers. Later in the game, when Tulo came up again, Collins simply held up four [...]
Morning Dump — Wednesday, April 6th
Seven innings pitched, no runs, four K’s, and a ton of groundballs. If you would have given me that stat line before last night’s game, I would have gotten pissed. That damn Kershaw did it to us again! But, obviously, that was Chacin’s line. The second year pitcher outdueled a popular NL Cy Young pick. The best part: he didn’t even have his best stuff. Obviously it’s early, but the recent starts of Chacin and De La Rosa have given us much to get excited over. Everyone expected those two guys to be decent, but very few thought they’d be [...]

The Rockies’ lineup is a work in progress. The parts are all there, but Jim Tracy is still deciding how to allocate them. Jim Armstrong’s article suggests that four spots are already taken. Dexter Fowler will hit leadoff, CarGo will hit third, Tulo will bat clean-up, and Iannetta will hit eighth. That leaves four more spots for Tracy to fill with Seth Smith, Todd Helton, Jose Lopez and Ian Stewart. Who knows how it will end up. I’ll give some more thoughts on the topic later on this week. Here is a nice little Q&A with Aaron Cook. He answered questions about his disappointing year last season, superstitions, Jeff Francis’s departure, and his nickname, Cookie. His explanation of how he developed the pause in his delivery was particularly interesting. Baseball really is such a mental game. Yesterday, Troy Renck posted another blog pertaining to the Michael Young situation. Buster Olney compared the negotiations between the Rangers and the Rockies to a game of chicken. I have a really bad case of Michael Young tired head. Also from the Post, this article was written by some lucky fan named Northsider. [...]
Tim Wheeler — Rockies’ Prospect Spotlight
In the dog-eat-dog world of professional baseball, lefties are wearing the Milkbone underwear. Franchises will do just about anything to get their hands on a quality southpaw hitter or pitcher. Left-handed people make up roughly 10% of the world’s population, but nearly a quarter of professional baseball players. Almost half of the position players in the Hall of Fame are left-handed. Iconic players Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Ty Cobb, and Stan Musial were all southpaws. There is a reason why fathers get excited when they see their toddler pick up a ball and heave it left-handed.
On Thursday the Rockies finalized a Minor League contract with Tim Redding. On Friday word was spreading that he is a clubhouse cancer. The Rockies pride themselves on pursuing not just good baseball players, but baseball players who conduct themselves with integrity and have high moral standards. This fact has led to the team having great clubhouse chemistry and a focused approach. A day after signing with the Rockies, Redding is doing his best to destroy that reputation. On Friday it became national news that Redding had gone on a radio show and discussed how former teammate Mike Bacsik had [...]
