Colorado Rockies prospect Shael Mendoza off to scorching start

How hot has Colorado Rockies prospect Shael Mendoza been to start his season in Grand Junction? The 20-year-old second baseman has not only etched his name in the record books once, but twice in the season’s first four games.

Prior to the start of this season, only five Grand Junction Rockies had posted a five-hit game in franchise history. Mendoza has now done it twice in just this season alone, including a 5-for-6 outing in Grand Junction’s 13-10 loss to Idaho Falls on Thursday night. That followed a 5-for-6 night on Tuesday night.

In all, the left-handed-hitting Mendoza started the season 12-for-17 with six RBI. Not a bad way to kick off the season for the Grand Junction second baseman and leadoff hitter.

"“It’s been the same approach for me since my first AB (at-bat). Focus on hitting the ball right back through the middle. Hit line drives. Stay focused on those things,” Mendoza told Rox Pile through an interpreter prior to Friday’s game against Ogden in Grand Junction. “Believe in your approach and have faith in it. Hit the ball hard. Hit it up the middle.”"

Mendoza played last in the Dominican Summer League in 2016, posting a .272 average with a homer and 19 RBI. The start he’s off to in Grand Junction is among the hottest streaks of his career but he’s taking it all in stride.

"“I don’t think about the results,” Mendoza said. “I wasn’t expecting it (the five-hit games) but when you’re confident enough, do the right things and execute a plan, good things happen.”"

Now playing in Grand Junction, Mendoza, a native of the Dominican Republic, says he is loving the environment in western Colroado.

"“It’s been fantastic. It makes me feel good. Hearing the fans cheer gives me more momentum every time I step between the lines,” he smiled."

Sure, it’s been a hot start to the season but Mendoza believes if he maintains his approach, it’s going to be a record-setting season.

"“My goal is to lead the league in every offensive category,” Mendoza said. “If I come here and compete every day, good things will happen. I’m just worrying about doing my best and helping my team win.”"
