As we discussed in our injury report earlier today, the Colorado Rockies were expected to make a move because of a concussion suffered by Tony Wolters on Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres. We now know who will be filling in behind the plate while Wolters is out.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Rockies placed Wolters on the seven-day concussion disabled list and selected the contract of veteran catcher Ryan Hanigan, who was working as one of the catchers at Triple-A Albuquerque.

The 36-year-old Hanigan was signed to a minor league contract by the Rockies on March 28 after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies the previous day. While in Triple-A, Hanigan was productive, batting .282 in 13 games. Additionally, he totaled nine runs, three doubles and six RBI while logging six walks and 12 strikeouts.

In parts of 10 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2007-13), Tampa Bay Rays (2014) and Boston Red Sox (2015-16), Hanigan has batted .250 with 69 doubles, one triple, 28 home runs, 202 RBI and 247 walks.

He will wear #30 with the Rockies and take up the 40th slot on Colorado’s 40-man roster. A spot was vacated when Colorado designated Cristhian Adames for assignment over the weekend.

Wolters suffered a concussion in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game at San Diego after being hit in the head by a bat on a swing. In 17 games this season, the 24-year-old Wolters has batted .346 (18-for-52) with three doubles, one triple, three RBI and three walks. His .346 batting average is second in the Majors among catchers with at least 15 games played.

Additionally, as we speculated earlier today might happen, Mike Dunn has been activated off the disabled list after suffering from back spasms. To make room on the roster, the Rockies optioned right-handed reliever Carlos Estevez to Triple-A.

The 31-year-old Dunn is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA (7.2 IP, 1 ER), two walks and 10 strikeouts over 10 appearances with the Rockies this season.

Estevez has appeared in 13 games for the Rockies this season and has gone 3-0 with a 7.94 ERA while posting four walks and 10 strikeouts. The 24-year-old’s 13 appearances are tied for the most on the club and his three wins are tied for second-most by a reliever in the National League.

Estevez, however, has given up 10 runs this season. Seven of those came in a nightmarish performance against the Washington Nationals on April 27 when he lasted just two outs, giving up four hits and walking two.
