Colorado Rockies: Three Asheville Prospects Win Awards

Earlier today the South Atlantic League (home of the Colorado Rockies Single-A affiliate the Asheville Tourists) announced the selection of the 2016 annual All-Star team. Three Rockies prospects were named – Brendan Rodgers was named the league’s best shortstop, Brian Mundell was named the league’s best first-baseman, and Yonathan Daza was named as one of the three best outfielders.

In addition to these awards, out of these Colorado Rockies prospects, Rodgers was selected as the Most Outstanding Major League prospect and Mundell won the league MVP award.

Mundell is leading the South Atlantic League in hits (164), extra base hits (72, including a Minor League Baseball record 57 doubles), total bases (265) and runs scored (90) in 129 games. He ranks second in batting average (.320) and is tied for first in runs batted in (80), with a .991 fielding percentage at first base.

Mundell is the first Asheville Tourists player to be named the League MVP since Rosell Herrera won the award in 2013.

Rodgers, who just turned 20 last week, has a .282 batting average with 19 home runs, 73 runs batted in, and 31 doubles in 109 games this year. He is one home run shy of becoming only the third middle infielder in Asheville Tourists history to hit at least 20 home runs in a season.

Daza has played in 119 games with the Tourists and has hit .307 (third-best in batting average in the South Atlantic League). Daza currently ranks second in hits (146), and second in doubles (35). Daza also has one of the strongest arms in the league, where he paces the league with 22 outfield assists.

The Tourists are currently fourth in the Northern division of the South Atlantic League, with a record of 30-33 with seven games left. They sit eight games back of the division-leading Augusta GreenJackets.
