The Colorado Rockies made two roster moves today. First baseman Mark Reynolds was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hand injury, and reliever Gonzalez Germen was designated for assignment.

With Reynolds carrying this hand injury for the last couple of weeks and seemingly aggravating it in yesterday’s win against the Texas Rangers (he left in the seventh inning), it isn’t a shock to see the Colorado Rockies make this move today.

These moves were announced by MLB.com’s Thomas Harding a short while ago:

Ben Paulsen was the most logical move for the Rockies to make, as he already played 29 games at first this season. There had been discussion about moving Carlos Gonzalez to first, but with his sprained ankle still bothering him, this prevents him from starting and he is still slated to come off the bench.

To prevent the middle of the lineup from being too left-handed heavy, catcher Nick Hundley has been moved up to sixth in today’s lineup.

The move of designating Germen is not a surprise. In 40 games, Germen had a high 5.31 ERA, a .266 average batting against and a WHIP of 1.62. He had failed to show any consistency in his performances and he was not good at preventing runs (25 runs given up – worst among the Rockies relievers).

The Rockies called up right-handed pitcher Matt Carasiti from Triple-A Albuquerque. In 44 combined games between Double-A Hartford and Triple-A, Carasiti, 25, has a 1.96 ERA, with 31 saves (from 35 opportunities), nine walks, 48 strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.85.

Carasati will make his MLB debut after being selected by the Rockies in the sixth-round of the 2012 draft out of St. Johns.

Congratulations to Carasiti and let’s hope he can bring a stabilizing presence to the beleaguered Rockies bullpen.
