We are now less than 72 hours from the MLB non-waiver trade deadline. With the improved play of the Colorado Rockies (now 11-4 since the All-Star break), the chances of general manager Jeff Bridich pulling any major moves now seems to have dissipated. However, two Rockies relievers are still being rumored to perhaps be on the move – Boone Logan and Jake McGee.

Rox Pile has covered the potential trade of Logan (read here) and now Jake McGee has been listed on the Top-50 Trade Candidates by MLB Trade Rumors at spot No. 30, right after Logan.

Since the All-Star break, McGee has a 1.80 ERA and a .167 batting average against. However, the last two games he hasn’t got an out and left five runners on base, and he has been bailed out by Scott Oberg.

However, there are plenty of teams playing down the stretch and into the postseason who will be looking for left-handed pitching help. Despite McGee’s 5.40 season ERA and 0-3 record, he can be still be counted on to matchup against the opposition’s key left-handed hitters and get them out.

McGee also brings 6.5 years of MLB experience and 41 career saves to his credit which any number of teams are going to view as a benefit.

It is hard to gauge what the Rockies could get back in a trade for McGee. With his overall struggles, they can’t expect too much. They could look to do a straight trade for another reliever or trade for a mid-level prospect.

Other teams looking for a short-term rental will also consider McGee, who is on a 1-year, $4.8 million contract per spotrac.com and is arbitration eligible at the end of the season.

Bridich should definitely take calls on McGee. He will get a better haul for Logan, who has had a great season (2.48 ERA, 0.86 WHIP), but if he can get any type of value for McGee he should jump at it.

With McGee’s fastball velocity having dropped from 95-96 mph to 91-92 mph on average, and taking into account his overall struggles since returning from the DL, it is a good time to move on from McGee and take advantage of a needy contending team desperate for left-handed bullpen help.

McGee was very good in Tampa Bay prior to joining the Rockies and a change of scenery out of the thin air of Denver may be the best thing for his future.
