Over the weekend, we sat down with Adam Ottavino and Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss to ask them questions ranging from the toughness of the Colorado Rockies’ current stretch on the schedule to Ottavino’s recovery from Tommy John surgery. Here’s what they had to say…

Ottavino, a reliever who threw batting practice on Saturday for the first time since his surgery, on watching starter Tyler Chatwood succeed after coming back from Tommy John surgery…

“He worked really hard. He waited longer than me. It’s exciting to watch him pitch good and everyone pitch good. I just want to contribute, get back and help us win.”

Weiss on Ottavino’s Saturday batting practice session…

“It was good. I’ve seen several of his bullpens over the last couple of weeks. I figured it was going to look pretty good against a hitter too.”

Weiss on moving Trevor Story around in the lineup…

“A lot of it has to do with the other pieces and how they all fit together. You have a left-hander in there (Madison Bumgarner) and I’m giving DJ (LeMahieu) a day (on Saturday). Story, I imagine from here on out, is going to bounce around a little bit. May be the 2 hole, the 7 hole, or somewhere near the middle of the order. A lot of it depends on the other pieces.”

Weiss on resting his starters as the Colorado Rockies don’t have another off day until June 13…

“I’m picking spots for several guys right now. We’re in the midst of a brutal schedule right now. The rainout in Pittsburgh made it even worse. I have my eyes on a day for Nolan (Arenado) at some point and try to hit all of these guys over the next week or so.”

Weiss on Charlie Blackmon at the top of the order…

“He’s become a very good base-stealer so they have to pay attention to him. He doesn’t have the stolen bases this year (three heading into Saturday’s matinee). He hasn’t really gotten going but that he doesn’t mean he’s not a threat. The pitcher and catcher still have to alter the game when he’s on base. He’s done a great job at the top.”

Weiss on playing a day game on Saturday after a night game on Friday, which followed a Friday early morning arrival from Boston…

“We’re probably not back to normal just yet. The quick turnaround after last night doesn’t help but we’re always sensitive to that. We look for opportunities to take things off their plate and get them off their feet. We’ll continue to do that.”

Weiss on Carlos Gonzalez and if he’s “back to normal” at the plate…

“I think he’s there. It doesn’t mean he’s going to get three hits or hit a homer every night but I think he looks much better to me in the box. He’s gotten some results the last few games so I think he’s in a good place.”

Weiss on the flexibility he has during the game with his 2016 bullpen…

“More than we have (in the past), believe me. We have some new pieces out there. Last night, being able to bring in Castro in a non-save situation and running it up to 99, it’s nice to have pieces like that to go to, regardless of the situation, but especially when you’re ahead. It makes a lot easier to keep that lead.”
