While Wednesday night’s 9-8 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in extra innings didn’t see the Colorado Rockies reverse their recent losing ways, rookie shortstop Trevor Story snapped out of his recent power funk and once again wrote his name in the record books.

The 23-year-old Story launched a solo homer off Pittsburgh starter Jon Niese in the fourth inning for his ninth home run of the season. That established a new National League rookie record for round-trippers in April, breaking the mark set by Albert Pujols in 2001. Story is now one away from tying the all-time home run mark for rookies in April, held by Jose Abreu who hit 10 in 2014.

The Rockies have three more games this month, finishing a four-game series with the Pirates at Coors Field on Thursday afternoon before jetting to Arizona as the Rockies kick off a 10-game road trip through the National League West on Friday. The games in Arizona will return Story to where his magical season began, hitting four homers in the first three games of the season against the Diamondbacks.

While the record was a high point of the evening for the Rockies and Story, he was the last batter of the game, looking at a called third strike from Pittsburgh closer Mark Melancon with runners at second and third. Story is now hitting .133 for the season with runners in scoring position.

“It doesn’t really mean anything to me right now,” Story told reporters after the game. “Just trying to win games. That’s the only thing that matters to me.”

Also in Wednesday night’s loss, Nolan Arenado launched his ninth homer of the season as a part of Colorado’s four-run fourth-inning barrage. Trevor Story and Arenado are now tied for the Major League lead in home runs with Neil Walker of the New York Mets.
