Colorado Rockies: The Best of Tuesday’s Quotes

Before and after the Colorado Rockies take the field, players and coaches have time to talk to members of the media. A lot can be learned through these conversations.

We took the best and most insightful quotes we heard after Colorado’s 7-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants and put them in one place so you could see what Walt Weiss, Trevor Story, and Tyler Chatwood were thinking before or after the game.

We’ll bring these quotes to you throughout the season as a way for you to see what’s being said by members of the Colorado Rockies.

Walt Weiss

On Jon Gray’s rehab outing for Class-A Modesto where he threw 64 pitches in 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking one.

“All positive stuff. Came out of it healthy. Threw the ball well. All positive stuff. He’s not really built up. He’s only been up to 64 pitches. That’s as many pitches as he thrown all spring. We probably need him to make another start and go a little deeper.”

On trying to protect his bullpen early in the season by not overworking them

“I’d like to protect all of them. It’s tough to do if your starter is struggling. I can’t just say, ‘OK, starter is going six no matter what.’ You have to make those determinations throughout the course of a game. There are a lot of things to think about when you have to make those decisions.”

Trevor Story

Answering a question when asked if he senses the crowd always wants him to hit a home run

“I wouldn’t really say I sense that. For me, I just try to hit the ball hard. If it gets in the air and goes out, that’s awesome. I hope they don’t think I’m going to hit one out every time because that’s not very realistic.”

On speaking with the media

“I realize that handling the media is part of the game. I think that’s a big part of the game and a good way to reach out to the fans. I have a set time for it. I handle it then and then it’s time to play baseball.”

Tyler Chatwood

On his outing where he gave up five runs in six innings against the Giants

“Two pitches really killed me tonight,” Chatwood said. “The pitch that Pence hit out was what we wanted: a down-and-in sinker. It got to the right spot, but he just beat me to the spot. The other one, I left the ball up and (Brown) hit it out of the park.”

On the battle that he had with Hunter Pence that resulted in Pence’s two-run homer

“I made some good pitches and he just kept battling. We wanted to go fastball down and in and he just hit it out.”
