The Colorado Rockies started strong with two first-inning runs, but Eddie Butler‘s bad start once again spoiled any chance of competing, and the New York Mets blew out the visiting Rox 12-3 in the fourth game of a series sweep on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.

The Rockies spotted Eddie Butler with two runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to home runs by DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado off Mets’ starter Noah Syndergaard, but the 2-0 lead wouldn’t last for very long with Butler going out for the bottom of the first inning.

Butler allowed three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by an RBI double from Daniel Murphy, Juan Uribe, and Kelly Johnson to give the Mets the lead right back.

Syndergaard struggled early on for the Mets, though, and the Rockies tacked on another run in the top of the third when Carlos Gonzalez drove in Charlie Blackmon on an RBI groundout, making the game 3-3. But, after the Mets scored in the bottom of the third inning to re-take the lead, New York would run away with the game.

Another Johnson double in the bottom of the third off Butler gave the Mets a 4-3 lead, and then in the bottom of the fourth, Curtis Granderson‘s two-run home run off Butler gave the Mets a 6-3 lead and chased the Rockies’ starter from the game after just four innings of work.

Butler ended up giving up seven hits and a walk, allowing six runs in his four innings, while striking out four hitters. His season ERA rose to 5.90 after the game.

Despite the early home runs, the Mets’ Syndergaard ended up having a solid day, allowing just three runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings of work, while striking out five Rockies’ hitters and earning the win.

After Butler was pulled, the Mets kept scoring, getting three more off Scott Oberg in the fifth and sixth innings, thanks in part to Oberg’s two walks in the sixth and both inherited runners scoring off reliever Christian Friedrich. That pushed the Mets to a 9-3 lead, though they weren’t done scoring.

After a quiet seventh inning from John Axford, Tommy Kahnle came out to throw the bottom of the eighth for the Rockies, and allowed a three-run home run to Juan Lagares to push the score completely out of whack at 12-3 in favor of the home club.

After going down quietly in the ninth inning, the Rockies lost the game and all four in the series. The Rockies return home for a nine-game, ten-day home stand beginning Friday night against the San Diego Padres.
