DJ LeMahieu Should Represent The Rockies At The All-Star Game

The National League All Star Game voting results keep coming in every week, and the Colorado Rockies are pretty unrepresented across the ballot.

A good few weeks aside, the Colorado Rockies haven’t quite had the season — and for the roster, the individual numbers — to earn slots on the National League All-Star team. Now, Troy Tulowitzki is starting to come around, and of course, Nolan Arenado has always been All-Star caliber, but besides that there just aren’t many realistic picks.
Couple that with the fact that a media market like Denver won’t typically have the votes to get players consistently in the All-Star Game (well… Kansas City fans are proving that whole “small media market” thing wrong, but that’s another story for another time), and you’ve got a small chance of seeing Rockies represented by more than the required one player at All-Star Weekend.
So now that we’ve seen another week of updates to the NL All Star voting ballot, it should come as no surprise that Tulowitzki is third among National League shortstops, Arenado is fourth among NL third basemen, and everyone else — besides Corey Dickerson 14th among outfielders — is nowhere to be found.
That’s fine; the Rockies don’t have many All-Star caliber guys. But at one position, this needs to be fixed by the NL All-Star coaching staff: DJ LeMahieu deserves to be the Rockies’ representative at second base.
Dee Gordon, who is right now about 100,000 votes ahead of Kolten Wong for the second base lead, completely deserves to win that race and start at second in Cincinnati next month.
But the other four NL second basemen in the top five — Wong, Joe Panik, Howie Kendrick, and Yunel Escobar — don’t deserve an All-Star nod ahead of LeMahieu, who’s been a revelation this season, currently second in the league in hitting to go along with his always phenomenal defense.
I’m not wild about the fan vote in general. If you know anything about me, you know I have little faith in the American public (read: people are idiots). Sorry.
But… I understand the whole fan aspect of voting, wanting to get people involved, trending it on Twitter, blah, blah, blah. So I’ll play your game, Major League Baseball, and I guess this system will work (what the hell am I gonna do to change, it anyways?).
DJ LeMahieu ought to be in the All-Star Game, and he can get there in one of two ways: you can vote for him all day every day (they let you vote 35 times a day, or something stupid like that), or the National League coaching staff can choose him as a reserve.
I truly hope one of two happens, because he’s deserved his All-Star nod and, after winning a Gold Glove as a defensive whiz last year, is proving to all of us how complete a player he is with the bat, too.
