Did Jon Gray ruin his chances of making the Opening Day roster?

Just a couple days ago in an article I wrote, Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said Jon Gray‘s arbitration date didn’t have an effect on him potentially making the Opening Day roster. On Saturday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs in Cactus League play, we all found out that Colorado’s number one prospect is in fact human.

It was an ugly one to say the least, as I was following the game on my phone. The Rockies ended up getting slaughtered by the Cubs by the final score of 18-4. Jon Gray was the Rockies starting pitcher; he didn’t even make it one full inning.

In just two-thirds of an inning, Gray surrendered four hits, seven runs-six earned, one walk, and two strikeouts. Gray saw his initial 2.08 ERA jump all the way up to 5.93 in a matter of one game, or two-thirds of an inning for that matter.

Gray didn’t really help his own cause out, obviously, but he bobbled an attempted squeeze from David Ross, as well as a bunt single from Addison Russell. Gray, in an interview after the game, said he couldn’t get into a groove. (Rockies.com)

"I just didn’t feel like myself at all,” Gray said. “I didn’t get strikes early. I didn’t give my team a chance. I think I was so worried about being in the zone that I left some too hittable.”"

You would rather have a game like this happen to Gray now, opposed to a regular season game with the Rockies or Isotopes for that matter.

It’s too early to tell whether or not this one performance will prevent Gray from making the Rockies starting rotation come Opening Day, but with Eddie Butler and Christian Bergman pitching pretty darn well, you would have to think he is the odd-man out at this point.
