September 13th, 2013. Rockies at Diamondbacks. 7:40 P.M. mountain time.

The Arizona Diamondbacks currently have a 73-72 record. They officially cannot win the National League West. According to the Fangraphs playoff odds, they have a 0.1% chance of making the playoffs as a wild card team. According to Coolstandings.com, they have a <0.1% chance of making the playoffs.

The Diamondbacks almost literally cannot lose another game this season if they want to make a miraculous run to the playoffs.

Is that likely to happen? Of course not. But given the conflict of interest for me whenever Brandon McCarthy pitches against the Colorado Rockies, I wouldn’t mind if the dream lived on another night for the Dbacks. I’m not saying I’m cheering against the Rockies…just that I wouldn’t mind if tonight wasn’t the night that Arizona gets eliminated from contention (officially). Make sense? Didn’t think so. Let’s look at the lineups.

For the Rockies it is no Carlos Gonzalez and no Dexter Fowler once again.

Corey Dickerson LF
DJ LeMahieu 2B
Troy Tulowitzki SS
Michael Cuddyer RF
Wilin Rosario C
Todd Helton 1B
Nolan Arenado 3B
Charlie Blackmon CF
Tyler Chatwood P

Chatwood will look to put together a couple positive starts between now and the end of the year to tie a bow on his stellar season. Here is the Diamondbacks lineup he will face Friday night:

Adam Eaton CF
Aaron Hill 2B
Paul Goldschmidt 1B
Eric Chavez 3B
Martin Prado 3B
Miguel Montero C
Gerardo Parra RF
Didi Gregorius SS
Brandon McCarthy P

As far as the Rockies are concerned, the biggest question might be who comes out of the bullpen, whether they have a lead or not. With the well-documented struggles of Matt Belisle, the team ought to be looking at guys like Mitchell Boggs to assess their readiness for a larger role next season. For all of our sake and especially for poor Belisle, let’s hope that is Weiss’s strategy this weekend.
