Rockies Announce Non-Roster Invitees

The Colorado Rockies announced a list of 24 non-roster invitees for this year’s Spring Training. The excitement that accompanies this list usually has to do with the hot prospects who we will get to see in action. This year those buzz-worthy names are Nolan Arenado, Chad Bettis and Kyle Parker, with starting pitcher Tyler Anderson, catcher Lars Davis and outfielder Corey Dickerson perhaps thrown in there as well.

The next recognizable group is usually the grizzled veterans who are either giving it one last shot or trying to rescue their career from the doldrums of disappointment. That list includes a couple former Rockies, Manuel Corpas and Yorvit Torrealba, as well as starting pitcher Chris Volstad and hybrid pitcher Miguel Batista. As Troy Renck notes in his summary of the list, it does not include Derek Lowe for now, but it might eventually.

Of the list of 24, the following guys have a chance to make the team right out of camp: Volstad, Batista, Torrealba, Corpas, and Arenado. You then have the guys who might show up on the big league club eventually over the course of the long season. That group includes Bettis and utility man Matt McBride. For my early predictions, give me Volstad and Corpas making the team out of camp, with Arenado, Bettis, and McBride on the team at some point throughout the season. Give me Torrealba and Batista never making a regular season appearance on the Rockies with Derek Lowe on the team if he ends up signing in Colorado. And, for goodness sake, just give me some hope that a guy named Henry Wrigley makes an appearance on the Colorado Rockies as soon as possible.
