Jeremy Guthrie will start for Colorado for the first time since June 17 and comes into the game with a 3-7 record and a 6.56 ERA. In four relief appearances Guthrie has shown signs of improvement giving up 6 runs over 12 1/3 innings and lowering his season ERA from 7.02 to 6.56. The best case scenario for both Guthrie and the Rockies might be for him to pitch well enough in the rotation to gain some attention as a potential trade candidate. Guthrie is in the middle of what has been his worst season in the majors and the Rockies might be having their worst season in club history and a parting of ways might be the best for both. Adam Wainwright starts for the Cardinals and is 6-8 with a 4.75 ERA over 16 starts after missing all of 2011. Wainwright struggled in his last start giving up 7 runs on 11 hits over 5 innings in a loss to the Pirates. This will be his fifth career start against Colorado, going 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA, but has not faced the Rockies since 2009.

Dexter Fowler returns to the starting line-up while Michael Cuddyer sits with the hot hitting Tyler Colvin starting in right. Colvin is hitting .364 with 7 home runs and 22 RBI in his last 18 games, including a 3 run home run last in a Rockies victory.
