Great post. Although there is some blame to go around on all sides, I am taking Ubaldo's side on this one. The franchise took him for granted and thought that since he was such a super, humble person he would just turn the other cheek on their failure to extend or up his contract after the best season of pitching in Rockies history. Knowing him I can't imagine he was intentionally trying to hit Tulo, but I am certain he was trying to throw one high, hard and tight to let Tulo know what he was facing. The comment Tulo made in the article that got to me was, "...everyone has been treated fairly..." Yeah, you were, Carlos was, Ubaldo was stiffed and I'll bet he was pretty damn resentful. I don't suppose he was overly concerned that Tulo got plunked and after what Tulo yelled at him -- an impolite form of chicken, Ubaldo said -- I can imagine Ubaldo is sitting back thinking, "....arrogant son of a bitch, wish I would have hit him with some more heat." I watched Tulo plow through the fans at Spring Training 3 years ago without acknowledging one person or signing one autograph on his way to his Lamborgini, while most of the other players spent a good amount of time chatting with fans. Ubaldo came over to talk with people who called his name, smiled all the time, signed loads of balls, and acted like a prince of a guy. I don't want anyone to get hurt but I must admit I felt that if anyone had it coming to him it was Tulo.
