Saturday, the Rockies traded infielder Alfredo Amezaga to his original major league team, the Florida Marlins, where he played from 2006-2009. In return, the Rockies acquired minor-league infielder Jesus Merchan.
Merchan has 17 RBIs in 58 games and has hit .268 this season. Mershan is the most recent addition to Colorado’s minor league system in recent weeks, including RHP Alex White, RHP Joe Gardner, UT Matt McBride, and UT Jorge Cantu. Later this month the Rockies will also be able to sign LHP Drew Pomereanz, the final player in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade.
Amezaga has been sent to the Marlin’s Triple-A affiliate, the New Orleans Zephyrs, and will rejoin previous teammate and Rockie, Jose Lopez who was signed by the Marlins in the beginning of June. Lopez has improved significantly at the plate since joining the Marlins with a .378 batting average. Lopez was only batting .208 with Colorado.
