Even Steven: Rockies .500 after two weeks…

The first two weeks of the Major League Baseball season have been proven to be average for the Colorado Rockies.

At 5-5 and in a three way tie with the Dodgers and DBacks, the Rox are sitting in good position, especially with the San Francisco Giants surging.

Ubaldo Jimenez has been spectacular, which isn’t a surprise to anyone who follows the Rox. Jimenez boasts a 2-0 record, a measly 2.25 ERA, an efficient 12 innings pitched and 13Ks.

The once head case Jorge De La Rosa, on the other hand, has been a tale of two pitchers. His first start of the season was a masterpiece. He limited the Padres to one hit in seven innings, struck out nine and didn’t allow a run in a 7-0 shutout win for the Rox. His next start, however, was a disaster: giving up eight hits, five runs (four earned), in a 5-0 loss to the Mets.

Greg Smith and Aaron Cook have a less impressive combined record of 1-2, 14 ERs on 21 hits and a collective era of 10.82.

The bats for the Rox have been fairly consistent, ranking 4th in the NL at .274. The OPS also ranks 4th at .823, and there are five players hitting over .300 (minimum 19 Abs)

The bullpen has actually been less neurotic than most people expected, with current closer Franklin Morales converting two of three save opportunities. Could be worse, a lot worse.

After two weeks, I think the Rockies look like NL West contenders, but it’s a long season…
